“Ruby Throated Hummingbird Pair”

It’s been quite the year! I feel like my health has been a big factor in my production of artwork and I really struggled to stay focused and energized.

Luckily, these hummingbirds came to visit at their feeder at our cabin in the Lost River Valley of West Virginia. I remember sitting in the sun, the birds flittered and twittered around my head, chasing each other in a dominant dance over their sugar water. It only took 5 minutes for these minute birds to understand that I would not hurt them.

After an afternoon enjoying their company and soaking up some sun rays, I was able to paint these two very quickly, which surprised both me and my husband. I was so proud of them that I placed them in frames and mounted them on my kitchen wall as soon as I could. I did not take pictures and share with everyone as I normally would, but wanted to bask in my little accomplishments over the summer.

“Great Horned” Owl Sketch

My mother-in-law is the most supportive person I know. She’s always there for me, no matter what. One day, we were sitting in my living room and to pass the time I began sketching a great horned owl. I was the first time I ever drew an owl. Working with negative space was a different challenge for me, and I was really happy with how this sketch was turning out.

My mother-in-law was watching me as the owl slowly revealed itself on the blank page. She began to understand what was on the page and fell in love with it. She couldn’t stop talking about how beautiful it was. She told me that I was a very talented artist, and that I should definitely pursue my art. Which got me thinking… why not?

I was so touched by her words. It meant so much to me to have her support. She asked if she have the sketch printed on a mug or a canvas bag, and I said “of course”! She then made sure to remind me every week until I finally created a canvas bag for her and her friends.

I received so many compliments on the sketch, all thanks to my mother-in-law. She is my biggest fan, and I’m so grateful for her love and support. I soon decided that it was time to make this Great Horned Owl a print and sell it to the world!

“Fly Bluebird Fly”

After procrastinating in many ways, I was able to capture a great image of my original acrylic, “Fly Bluebird Fly”. I was able to lovingly place this painting in the warm sunshine on a February day and snap a high quality image. As I lined up the camera I was taken back to the weekend that it was rendered during a few stormy days in 2022.

I painted this Eastern Bluebird with a broken heart during the summer of 2022. I have to admit that it’s my favorite bird above the Florida state line. They’re extraordinarily vibrant and have a beautiful, twittering song as they flit about the forest.

I arrived at our West Virginia cabin one Friday afternoon after a week away only to find a beloved Eastern Bluebird, long deceased, inside the house. I was overwhelmed with sadness. The very next weekend, the same thing happened. We had no answers as to why these elusive birds would be inside the house. They are territorial and typically do not stray from their home turf.

Admittedly, I had tried to entice them over to our “neck of the woods” by mixing their favorite food in the bird feeder.

As I held each of their limp bodies in my hands preparing to bury them, I found that the feathers reflect light with every movement. Essentially, scattering all colors, only allowing the color blue to reach our eyes. The original acrylic painting uses iridescent blue as it’s the only color that even comes close to the vibrancy of the bird’s feathers.

I hope this reflects in the printed version. The print is displayed on poster-paper but can be converted to canvas or quality gallery paper. It can also be framed.

“Hummingbird Mom”

This painting came together over many months of picking it up and putting it down. After enjoying the antics of our local hummers, I found the google image of an iridescent hummingbird in a little nest and fell in love with the colors. It was not meant to become part of the mosaic series, yet, after much deliberation, here it is and I love it! The original painting contains silvery reflections on the back of the bird. I am considering including this in the first edition prints that I make of this painting.

1. Unique Circuit: The rufous-tailed hummingbird embarks on one of the most unusual migratory journeys of any bird relative to its body size. They travel in a clockwise loop around western North America, breeding as far north as Alaska and wintering in Mexico. This pattern contrasts with the typical north-south migrations of most birds.
2. Distance Champions: Despite their tiny size, rufous-tailed hummingbirds are long-distance champions. They can cover up to 2,000 miles round trip during their migration, with some individuals even venturing further. This remarkable feat requires incredible endurance and efficient energy use.
3. Segregated Travel: Interestingly, the migration of rufous-tailed hummingbirds shows gender and age segregation. Adult males typically migrate earlier and independently, while adult females and juveniles often travel together in loose groups. This difference in migration patterns may be related to varying resource needs and competition pressures.
