This painting came together over many months of picking it up and putting it down. After enjoying the antics of our local hummers, I found the google image of an iridescent hummingbird in a little nest and fell in love with the colors. It was not meant to become part of the mosaic series, yet, after much deliberation, here it is and I love it! The original painting contains silvery reflections on the back of the bird. I am considering including this in the first edition prints that I make of this painting.

Unique Circuit: The rufous-tailed hummingbird embarks on one of the most unusual migratory journeys of any bird relative to its body size. They travel in a clockwise loop around western North America, breeding as far north as Alaska and wintering in Mexico. This pattern contrasts with the typical north-south migrations of most birds.
Distance Champions: Despite their tiny size, rufous-tailed hummingbirds are long-distance champions. They can cover up to 2,000 miles round trip during their migration, with some individuals even venturing further. This remarkable feat requires incredible endurance and efficient energy use.
Segregated Travel: Interestingly, the migration of rufous-tailed hummingbirds shows gender and age segregation. Adult males typically migrate earlier and independently, while adult females and juveniles often travel together in loose groups. This difference in migration patterns may be related to varying resource needs and competition pressures.
